09/29/2025

JONESBORO – Students at Arkansas State University can enjoy taking part in Hispanic Heritage Month events around campus.

The annual month-long celebration and free activities kicked off on Sept. 15, and continues through Oct. 20.

Dr. Latika Johnson, director of the Multicultural Center says they are excited to share Hispanic culture with the university and Jonesboro communities.

"Hispanic Heritage Month is a meaningful time to honor the rich histories and contributions of Hispanic, Latina and Latino communities. It has been wonderful to see the energy and engagement so far, and there is still so much more to look forward to in the coming weeks," said Johnson.

Below is the schedule of events and when they will take place:

  • A Hispanic Heritage Month Leadership Panel will begin at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, in the Spring River Room of Reng Student Union.

  • Viva Hip Hop Dance Workout with Hermana y Hermano student organization (HYH) takes over the Red WOLF Center at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7. This group fitness class features a curated playlist highlighting Latin hip hop artists. All are welcome to come move, vibe and honor Latin culture through music and dance.

  • Take a shot at Loteria, a traditional Mexican board game with SAB, HYH and the Multicultural Center at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, in the St. Francis Room of Reng Student Union. This is a fun, bingo-style festive game that adds culture. Enjoy music, snacks and prizes as they celebrate Latin and Hispanic heritage.

  • Join “I Love Mi Gente” with HYH and Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. at 4 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20, in the Multicultural Center in Reng Student Union. Celebrate the closing of Hispanic Heritage Month with a student-led panel on culture, identity, personal stories and honor the strength and unity of the Hispanic, Latina and Latino communities.

The educational events also include some that have already occurred, including:

  • Cultura Connection: Language and Respect Quiz
  • Cultura Connection: Tradiciones a Través de la Cultura
  • Cultura Connection: Indigenous Histories
  • El Grito
  • Cultura Connection: Urban Legends

"I hope students walk away with a deeper understanding of how they can explore various cultures and build meaningful connections through campus engagement. Most importantly, I hope the month sparks continued curiosity, conversation and connection throughout the year," Johnson added.

Johnson also thanks the contributions of those who helped make the celebrations for Hispanic Heritage Month possible: SAB, HYH, Latina and Latino Faculty and Staff Association, the Red WOLF Center and Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc.
